My name is Michael Carter and I am a resident at the Brian Center Botetourt in Fincastle Virginia. I came here in February 2010 from The Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Lewisburg WVA.

I was admitted in very bad shape health wise. I was overweight. I had sleep apnea, and was on a ventilator to breathe due to the muscles in my neck being swollen. I was unable to walk or assist with movement other than rolling side to side in bed.

9 weeks later after some great therapy from occupational, physical, and speech therapists, plus great doctors, nurses, and CNA’s; my life has changed for the better.

Now I am able to clothe myself, bathe, walk, speak, get out of bed, and I am 128 lbs lighter.

Most of these things the general public takes for granted, but I was taught to make things a priority and have a daily to goal to meet.

Once I returned home, I continue to use the measures taught to me through therapy, to breathe, to lose weight, and to stay strong.

When it came time for mom to be transferred to another facility from the Charleston Hospital we did not know what to do or where to turn. At that time the only option offered was a ventilator facility in Ohio.

We knew this move would hurt our mom emotionally and physically. The facility in Fincastle had been mentioned early in her sickness. But we were told it would be impossible to get mom into your facility.

We asked if they would call and request admission, and the social worker from Charleston called the Brian Center and mom was approved.

From the day mom was transferred to your facility, to the date of her passing, she was treated with compassion and given the dedicated medical care she needed for her health problems.

It takes knowledge to care for patients like those at the Brian Center, but it also takes compassion and the staff at the Brian Center has great compassion for their work and for those that they place in their care.
